Community Activities at CHIIR 2027
ACM 2027 SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval (CHIIR)

Connect, Exchange, and Build Community

One of the strengths of the ACM CHIIR community is its interdisciplinary and international nature. Beyond the technical program, CHIIR provides opportunities to meet new people, exchange ideas, and build connections across research areas, institutions, countries, and career stages.

To foster a welcoming and inclusive conference experience, we are planning a series of community activities during CHIIR 2027. These activities are intended to encourage informal interactions, support first-time attendees, and help strengthen our community.

In particular, we hope to:

  • Help newcomers and first-time CHIIR attendees feel welcome and connected.
  • Create opportunities for informal networking and discussion.
  • Foster exchange between researchers with diverse backgrounds.
  • Strengthen the sense of community that makes CHIIR a unique venue.

Activities in Preparation

We are currently developing several activities and will share additional details as they become available. Some ideas currently under consideration include:

  • Pre-conference dinners or drinks for participants arriving early, including the opportunity to try Berlin's iconic Currywurst together.
  • Community communication channels (e.g., WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, or Slack) to facilitate informal communication and coordination during the conference.
  • Morning runs or walks for attendees interested in starting the day together.
  • Community lunches and coffee break activities that encourage interaction across institutions, research areas, and career stages.
  • Informal PhD lightning rounds, providing doctoral students with an opportunity to introduce themselves and their research through short elevator pitches.

This list is not final and may evolve as plans develop.
