In line with ACM’s policies, the use of AI to assist in writing a submission to CHIIR 2027 does not require any disclosure, while the use of AI to conduct research does require careful disclosure. For a detailed distinction between these two uses of AI, please consult the ACM policy on using Artificial Intelligence.
With regard to writing assistance, the following uses of AI are acceptable (taken from CEUR-WS: CEUR Policy on AI-Assisting Tools):
- AI can be used to identify and correct grammatical errors, typos, and other writing mistakes. This helps improve the clarity and professionalism of your writing.
- AI can help you rephrase sentences or paragraphs to improve clarity, conciseness, or style. This can be helpful for expressing ideas in a more sophisticated way.
- AI can assist with writer's block or retrieving definitions, as long as its use is contingent upon human critical thinking and judgment to ensure accuracy and originality.
- AI can be used to translate text from another language into English or vice versa.
- AI can create images based on text prompts, which is acceptable only when the paper's core topic is about automatic image generation.
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, coherence, and scholarly quality of the submitted work. AI tools must not be used as a substitute for the authors’ own intellectual contribution, critical judgment, or engagement with the research.
Submissions may be desk-rejected if they do not meet the basic scholarly standards expected for review. This includes, but is not limited to, submissions that contain:
- incoherent or generic argumentation;
- excessive redundancy or low-density text;
- unsupported, misleading, or fabricated claims;
- fabricated, irrelevant, or non-existent references;
- methods, results, or interpretations that are insufficiently specified or not meaningfully connected to the research contribution;
- text that does not demonstrate substantive authorial engagement with the topic, literature, data, or findings.
This applies regardless of whether AI tools were used.
When in doubt whether your use of AI needs disclosure, please reach out to the Program Chairs.
